SHANNON’S GUIDE TO KEFIR

Hello, thanks for reading, Shannon’s Guide To Kefir.  You have probably heard about the health benefits of balancing your gut bacteria.  Learning to add foods into your diet that are gut friendly is spouted as the key to a healthy well being and also diminishing belly fat.  About 10 years ago, I had my first back surgery.  It has been an interesting journey.  I had to have another surgery 2 years later.  Unfortunately, I became a bit dependent on pain pills.  If you have ever had to be on pain pills you know how they can reek havoc on your digestive system.

Now I know that some don’t care to hear this, but with all the anesthesia the doctors had to use on me, I don’t think I pooped for a month after my first surgery.  I was absolutely miserable.  Then I was on a regimen of pills for years and still need some here and there.  I need to have another surgery, but I think I will just deal with it.  Anyway, back to pooping.  I had a lot of trouble in the bathroom department.  For years I tried every over-the-counter medicine, every prescription medicine and every natural remedy I could find. Nothing made me feel normal.

SHANNON’S GUIDE TO KEFIR

After about 10 years, I finally came across kefir.  At first I would buy kefir in the store with little results.  When I made it myself, I saw amazing results.  I am telling you that this has changed my life!

Kefir is a fermented drink, traditionally made with either cows milk or goats milk.  But with the rage of all the new ‘milks’ out there, it can definitely be made with any milk you choose.  I do make it with whole cows milk because it has a lot of sugar for the grains to eat.  It is made by adding kefir grains to milk.  Over a 24 hour period the microorganisms in the grains ferment the sugars in the milk and turn it into kefir.  This tastes very similar to yogurt but has a thinner consistency.

Kefir contains about 30 different microorganisms, making it a much more potent source of probiotics than other fermented dairy products.  Kefir may help with multiple digestive issues and is easy to make at home.  There has been a tremendous difference since I have been having kefir in my smoothies daily.  I have a movement every day.  Therefore I am much happier and feel a lot lighter.  So, if you want to make your own kefir, I will show you how.

SHANNON’S GUIDE TO KEFIR

First, make sure you buy kefir grains that you can use over and over again, not the kind that you only use once.  Add your grains to a glass jar and I put a coffee filter over the top of the jar.  You want air to be able to get in the jar but also no bugs.  You can use a piece of cotton also.

Add the amount of milk that your grains require.  Let this sit at room temperature for 24 hours.  When your kefir is fermented, you’ll want to strain the grains out so you can use them again.  When you strain the grains avoid using anything metal.  I use a mesh strainer and a rubber spatula.  I strain the kefir into a mason jar, cover and refrigerate.

Now you can add new milk to your grains and start new.
